Regional Research
Haematology is an emerging field of Medicine in Pakistan. Research in the field of haematology is in its infancy here, and there is a dire need to explore what is being done as well as what can be done in order to improve health care system. Basic regional trends are the most important areas to be explored in haematology; we are still lacking in having even baseline data of CBC in our population! http://www.abstracthaem.yolasite.com/

Dear Dr Mehmood ul Hasan, would you suggest the measures which should be adopted to enhance research in the field of hematology. In my humble opinion, some of the institutions are now engaged in research at their own levels. However, the effort at different centres are not yet integrated. Research programmes at university level, if strengthened through research facilities and availability of funds, can be instrumental in creating research environments!

new post RE: Improving Research
- The field of Haematology is undoubtedly contributing to medical research in Pakistan for better health care. Once considered an orphan, Haematology is now a well-reputed and honoured branch of medicine. - You are absolutely right that a culture of research is needed, rising from the undergraduate levels.

2. Pathologists (and Oncologists, Physicians, and Paediatricians) should make a checklist to point out that how many of the haematological disorders (for example) are studied regarding their epidemiology, aetiology, pathogenesis, frequency of symptoms and signs, differential diagnosis, best and available diagnostic tests, their evidence-based treatment, and prognostic markers. Indigenous research is absolutely vital for our country, especially in medicine, irrespective of the discipline. Also it should be clinically relevant and policy relevant because that is where it is needed most. It is however important to find out the reasons that why we are unable to do so. My view is that we have following problems: 1. Medical curriculum is not oriented to promote learning of skill and background needed for research. Obviously there is lack of trainers as well. 2. There is no pressure to do so. If reasearch is adequately rewarded, by contributing towards status gain and monetary benefit then people will start doing it.Unfortunately the so called research that is being done is mostly of very low quality, not relevant clinically or for policies. 3.There should be positions in public sector and other institutions where people are provided job as researchers and they should be well paid so that people can think beyond earning for survival. 4. The policy makers should be well informed and trained to ask for local evidence from professionals without which there is wastage of resources 5. Different types of audits including clinical audits should be introduced by institutions to motivate professionals to practice evidence based medicine. 6. There should be effective regulatory body that can monitor the practices of institutions and individuals and make this information public. 7. Professional bodies should take initiatives and do these things volutarily and lobby in right quarters for incorporation of results of their efforts There are many more problem but we need to take more measures from all possible forums.
