Andrew is a Senior Scientist in the Program in Genetics and Genome Biology at The Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute in Toronto and Professor in the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Divisions at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Toronto. From 2002-2012 he held a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Genetics of Complex Diseases.

His scientific interest is concentrated on the genetics of human diseases. Specifically, he is the lead investigator on large study to investigate the genetic determinants of risk for long-term complications of type 1 diabetes, including retinopathy and nephropathy, as well as their risk factors. He has also worked on a number of other traits, including bleeding disorders, autistic traits, polycystic kidney disease, as well as measures of eye sight, heart rate, breast density and blood pressure. In the field of hemostasis and thrombosis he led the identification of the mutation and gene that is responsible for Quebec Platelet Disorder, and has contributed to work on the genetics of von Willebrand factor/disease. Since 2001 he has been director and co-director of the Statistical Analysis Facility of The Centre for Applied Genomics, a Canadian Genome Centre based at The Hospital for Sick Children where he has directed genome-wide linkage, association, sequencing, expression and epigenetic studies of both rare simple diseases and complex diseases. In particular he is focused in combining traditional genome-wide linkage approaches with next-generation sequencing (exome, genome) to identify causal variants for rare Mendelian diseases.

He has published over 258 papers in various scientific journals. He dreams of using genetic information to improve public health.

Catherine (Cathy) Hayward, MD PhD, is a laboratory and clinical hematologist, and clinician investigator. She is Professor of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, and Medicine at McMaster University and is Head of Coagulation for the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program. Dr. Hayward is well known for her research on platelets and bleeding disorders, including the best strategies to investigate bleeding disorders and the molecular causes and consequences of platelet function disorders. She is President of the International Society for Laboratory Hematology, President-Elect of THSNA (Thrombosis Hemostasis Societies of North America) and the Director for North American on the Board of WASPaLM (World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine). She has published extensively and has been cited over 8000 times.

Dr. Sheikh is currently working as Consultant & Program Director, Adult Allergy & Immunology, Department of Medicine. He has established the first Adult Allergy & Immunology fellowship program in the Middle East. He is actively involved in patient care, as well as teaching of medical students, Residents and fellows. His research interests include Anaphylaxis, Primary Immune deficiency, Hereditary Angioedema, Food Allergy and Urticaria. He has published the first paper from Saudi Arabia, systematically looking at the presentations of anaphylaxis. Dr. Sheikh has chaired many international symposia sessions. He is also invited as faculty for “meet the expert” sessions. He was recognized as the best mentor for Residents’ research by the Department of Medicine, at his hospital on its annual recognition day. Dr. Sheikh regularly publishes in international peer reviewed journals.

Dr. Sheikh has also worked in the USA for about 10 -15 years. He was voted America’s top physicians on more than one occasion. He also won the prestigious American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology research grant in 1997.

Professor Ghulam J Mufti is head of the department of haematological medicine at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’s hospitals, King’s College London, with a team of 13 professors, 6 senior lecturers/lecturers and approximately 100+ research staff. In addition Professor Mufti is the Clinical Director of Laboratories Sciences and a non-executive director of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Professor Ghulam Mufti has extensive clinical and research expertise in leukaemias, lymphomas and in particular myelodysplastic syndromes, for which he is internationally renowned. His particular area of research has focused on molecular aberrations in MDS/AML and the identification of novel therapies that include gene and cell based therapies. He has published 400+ papers and chapters in scientific journals and textbooks on leukaemias and MDS.

He heads the research groups at King’s working on the molecular genetics of MDS/aplastic anaemia/AML, and is a member of the working group that produced national and international guidelines on the treatment and prognosis of MDS. He is a founding member and chair of the UK MDS Forum. He is also a member of the European Bone Marrow Transplantation Group and a founding member of the Board of the International Myelodysplastic foundation, for which his department at King’s College Hospital is a recognised Centre of Excellence. The department is also a centre of excellence for Leukaemia Lymphoma Research and is the largest allogeneic bone marrow transplant centre in the UK, and the only gene and cell based therapies centre for myeloid leukaemia and allied diseases.

Dr. Khurram Tariq is a Hematologist and Medical Oncologist at the Selby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center, an affiliate of UNC, in Boone North Carolina where he is the Director of the Cancer Center Service Line.

Dr. Tariq is uniquely qualified as being triple ABIM board certified in the fields of Internal Medicine, Hematology and Medical Oncology. Dr Tariq obtained his undergraduate training in Bachelors of Science at the prestigious UNC-CH (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). During his undergrad years, Dr Tariq founded several student organizations including MOSAIC and The Economics Club and was honored with several distinctions, including the university’s highest award, The Chancellor’s Award.

He later obtained his internal medicine training at University of Florida in Jacksonville, and went on to receive his Hematology and Medical Oncology training at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. Over the years, first as a student and then as a resident and a fellow, Dr Tariq has made significant contributions to the global discussion in the field of Hematology, Medical Oncology, Nephrology and other areas of Internal Medicine with numerous publications in reputable medical and scientific journals.

During his fellowship training, Dr. Tariq played an integral role in diagnosing a 21 year old young female patient with TAFRO syndrome: A very rare disease that initially led to hepatic dysfunction, pulmonary and renal failure and a near-complete fibrosis of bone marrow in a previously active and healthy female. She eventually had full recovery after treatment with a novel drug and gave birth to a healthy baby. This is only the third case of TAFRO ever to have been diagnosed in the United States and the first case of TAFRO in an individual of African American descent. In appreciation of his academic and leadership contributions to the field of medicine in the early stage in his career, in 2018 Dr. Tariq was inducted as a Fellow in the prestigious American College of Physicians and earned the title FACP.

In his personal life, Dr Tariq was born in Pakistan. He grew up in Cary, NC, and went to Cary High School. He can speak several different languages due to his diverse background. Dr. Tariq loves to travel and has been to different parts of the United States and abroad, including three trips to Alaska and several visits to the Himalayan mountain range in northern part of Pakistan, which is home to six of the eight tallest peaks in the world, the tallest desert and some very good fishing—a hobby he enjoys dearly.

In the year 2007, Dr Tariq was awarded with a travel scholarship through UNC to document an ancient tribe in the remote part of the Himalayan mountain range believed to the be descendant of Alexander the Great. Dr Tariq is blessed with a small family comprising of his wife, a mother and two sisters living on east and the west coast. He loves to spend his free time with family and friends.
